Hi, I'm running some computational biology visualization programs such as VMD http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/. It seems that Xming that comes with andLinux package does not support OpenGL well. I was wondering if anyone encounter similar problems and what the solutions might be.
Also, is it possible to replace Xming with a commercial X server such as X-win32 or Exceed in andLinux? The commercial X servers have better OpenGL 3D support from my experience. |

It is possible to get OpenGL to work with Xming, but it is slow. The issue is mostly with the WinTap driver being so CPU intensive. I am working on a solution for this in the next version.

I have also come across similar problem. I was able to run a visualization software named Paraview out of the box. But the problem is, it is not showing the graphics area, it is just grayed out. I presumed that this is similar to dxubuntu's problem (Paraview trace its ancestor back to OpenDx viewer which might be a close cousin to dxubuntu's viewer).
Any help from you guys is highly appreciated.
Thank you. |

Ok.
I visisted Xming website today and found two versions of Xming (the one with mesa-OpenGL and the other is openGL). I am not sure which one is included in andLinuxrc5. I downloaded the one with mesa and replaced the xming that comes with andlinux. The trick seems to work. Paraview now work like a charm. I can use the software just like in the linux environment.
I am not an expert on this field, anybody can explain the difference between the two version of xming? why not andlinux comes with the mesa version?
Thank you. |

Replace the Xming version that comes with andlinux with the one with Mesa version that is in the Xming website. It works with me. I am now able to visualize result from openFoam in andLinux .
See if it works for you too.
Thank you.
BTW: Salome-Meca-2007 works too, out of the box after replacing the Xming version. I have now a running Pre/Post processor in andlinux.
Thank you. |

I installed the mesa-Xming version too. Now OpenGL applications at least show something without bad distortion, however they seem pretty slow (better than nothing still).
Besides that, all other applications using the X graphics system seem to run much smoother after installing mesa-Xming over the Xming provided by andLinux. I recommend trying |

Thats good.
Spread the good news! Have you tried the cygwin version of OpenFOAM? how would you compare the speed? I have not able to successfully build the cygwin version of OpenFOAM. I think this is (andLinux) a better path than the cygwin version.
Thank you.. |

I haven't tried cygwin... it seem that you have to tinker a little bit and I haven't had the time to do that... I think andLinux is the way to go. it is simple and easy...
I am linking a thread at the Ubuntu forum to your comments above...
cheers... |

| I replaced xming with mesa-xming and now I can't seem to get it to launch. I selected the same install directory that andlinux installed it to and added 192.168.11. andLinux to me X0.hosts file. What am I doing wrong? |
